Me, Matt Tewes

While my 'most unforgettable years' were growing up in Mt. Lake, Minnesota, USA, I guess Studio Mosquito Blue got its ‘'start’  on a sunny Saturday afternoon in a small park in Sao Paolo, Brazil. I stumbled across a park filled with color. Incredible color. An 'energy'. The color was coming from all sorts of sources. The vegetation, the light, the people and… the art. That day back in the Spring of 1997, I bought my first canvas, a box of paint and 5 paintbrushes. And went home with a new 'energy’.

In fact, for me, 'energy' is color, light & movement. My approach is suspended between image, reality and dreams melting together. Life.

This has inspired my most recent work using mannequins, which I make or give new life to old discarded window mannequins.  I transform them with characters from comic books, clippings and paint. Like humans, each mannequin has a different story. On the torsos of men and women, I try to transfer an instinctual and emotional approach that is perpetually suspended between image, reality and dream. The creation of each new work follows both aesthetical and intellectual research to create a relationship between the human form and the matter, both organic and inorganic. Their eternal youth and beauty of these body shapes reflecting themes like wallpapers or comics strips do, like the soul of a human does, like a mirror, or a screen…A never-ending supply of stories vivid in color, light, energy and movement…Life.

I continue to search for new ideas, exploring the many mediums, styles, forms that come across in everyday life, whether in imagination or reality. The 'energy’ continues. I hope you like what you see.
